Craniosacral Therapy
Craniosacral Therapy is a non-invasive therapy that restores the body’s natural self-healing mechanisms, so the
body can repair itself and re-establish its own good health.
It’s a gentle, hands-on method of evaluating and enhancing the function of a physiological body system called
the craniosacral system.
A typical session is performed with the client fully clothed laying face up on a flat treatment couch. I place
my hands lightly on the client's body, tuning in to the person by ‘listening’ with my hands to the rhythmic
movement of the bones, tissues and fascia.
The concept of the craniosacral system was first explored by the osteopath William Sutherland over 100 years
ago. His studies revealed an independent rhythmic motion of the body tissues unrelated to breathing or heart beat.
This movement is caused by the rhythmic changes of the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord (cerebrospinal
fluid). This has a direct influence on the central nervous system which links to and controls every cell of our
body. When this motion is restricted or unbalanced it has a direct effect on health at all levels. Any problems
that arise from any of our body systems will have an effect on the cranial system and vice versa.
Craniosacral treatment focuses on sensing this subtle rhythmic motion, through gentle palpation of the cranial
bones, the sacrum (tail bone), and other structures related to production and functioning of the cerebrospinal
fluid. The aim of treatment is to identify and release any restrictions, blockages or imbalances in the system and
create a balanced state of functioning (true health) and an overall sense of well-being.
